Champions of The Round Table

Just a run down on Jim McElwain, Offensive Coordinator at the Capstone, Coach Mac is from Montana, where he played QB at Sentinel High School in Missoula. He then went to college at Eastern Washington from 1980 to 1983. Where he earned a degree in education.

After graduating from Eastern Washington he stayed there as a graduate assistant and eventually won the job as QBs and receivers coach.

Coach Mac was offered the job as offensive coordinator at Montana St. from 1995-1999. His offense was number one in scoring offense in 1998, with 31.6 points a game.

His first job in Division 1-A football was at Louisville. Once at Louisville he coached the special teams, and recievers from 2000 to 2002. He followed former head coach John L. Smith to Mich. St. where he coached special teams and receivers.

Jim McElwain's NFL coaching career was very brief. He was offered the QBs coach job at Oakland. He was only there one year in which the Raiders ended the season 2-12.

This didn't stop him, in 2007 he was contacted by Fresno State. He was offered the offensive coordinator job and he took it. While at Fresno St. he built a powerhouse offense ranked 38th in the country averaging 419.5 yards a game and 32nd in the nation in points per game.

Then on Feb. 1, 2008 Jim McElwain accepted an offer by head coach Nick Saban as Offensive Coordinator at the University of Alabama. Since coming to T-Town Coach Mac has led the Tide to two 12-0 regular seasons. They played for two SECCs, and one BCSC.

This year, at least early on the offense will be asked to keep the ball, score points, and eat clock until the young defense catches up. Coach has done a fine job, and I expect him to have an even more opened playbook this year, based on the experience level he has coming back this Fall.

Hopefully by opening game the offense will be sharp. I think Greg McElroy will be better, I know Coach McElwain talked back in May about his footwork getting better, and how that would help spread the field a little more with him. Coach also talked about Julio Jones. When asked about J.J. he said that he felt developing the younger receivers would help get J.J. the ball more often.

I wish him continued success as he leads his charges into the fray with the mightiest conference in the nation, the SEC. RTR!

Coach Mac has a tough job! To try & spread the ball around on a team that has that many playmakers is hard.
